My heart broke on September 10th. I have followed Charlie Kirk for years because we share the same goals--to present the truth to young people in a loving, respectful way and invite them into a living relationship with Jesus Christ. Charlie Kirk used political debate to reach high school and college students with the truth: I use allegorical fantasy stories to show people the strong and loving personality of Jesus as I know Him.

Why did Charlie Kirk’s death affect me so much?
The brief explanation is the division in our country isn’t new. When I started college, the Viet Nam war had torn our country apart. Students were protesting on many college campuses. I was one of them. Then Kent State happened. (If you don’t know what that refers to, look it up. It was terrible.)
So as a freshman, I “deconstructed” my religious upbringing and considered myself an atheist … but deep down I knew my life was empty. I couldn’t imagine living my adult life as bored and depressed as I was. I needed a reason to live, but I saw none. I lost hope.
At the same time in history, the Jesus Revolution was happening nearby. People explained to me the need to meet Jesus in ways I had never heard at church as a child. One night all alone, I called out in desperation to heaven, “God, if You’re real, You’d better show me … but You’ll have to show me by Yourself because church is lame.” By the end of two weeks, there was no doubt in my mind! He did meet me where I was. For the next year, I got to know the personality and love of Jesus through wonderful Christian fantasy writers. Then I was able to accept Him as my Lord (and I found churches that truly represented His truth and love).
Because of my history, I can relate to the disillusionment I hear from young people today. I know they are searching for truth and their personal reason to live. God gave Charlie Kirk a purpose—to engage young people in meaningful dialogue with respect and love. He gave me a purpose—I write music and stories to touch people’s hearts for Him. It has been my joy to do that for more than 50 years. God has a purpose for everyone … If you’ll listen to Him, He’ll gladly tell you why He made you. He has a good reason, just ask Him.
